Holiday meals are so much about connecting with family and friends. Everyone has their favorite dish, from green bean casserole to mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.
We offer here some of the standout sides from the Serious Foodie chefs, as well as from other experts – old standards, along with a number of dishes inspired from our favorite international regional cuisines. These dishes can also serve as vegetarian main dishes.
The Serious Foodie Peruvian Blood Orange Sauce is a great complement to most any vegetable dish, but especially butternut squash (click HERE) and roasted vegetables (click HERE).
It might be too cold in some areas to grill, but you can simply broil vegetables on a skewer, and finish with some seasoning salt (for instance, try one of the Serious Foodie spice rubs, such as Asian Fusion or TexMex rub on any vegetable dish – click HERE). We provide a full recipe on grilled vegetables HERE.
We love green leafy vegetables – especially kale and Swiss chard. Here are two very simple recipes for delicious healthy side dishes.
We came across a series of Moroccan carrot recipes, which can be served warm or in salads. These recipes are so easy & delicious, and slightly exotic – they will be sure to please and impress your guests.

Last, but not least, it’s hard not to serve carbs during holiday dinners. Potatoes, stuffing, rice, etc. are almost a necessity.
Let’s start with the most asked-for side dish on our table – the famous Chef Joel Robuchon mashed potatoes. There is nothing healthy about these potatoes – they are just an amazing luxury. And they take some work, but nothing is complicated. Just follow our recipe, which you can find HERE.
Potatoes are underrated as base for appetizers as well as for side dishes. The picture for this section was found on the Mamasgottabake.com website – and these potatoes are cute, and addicting. Click HERE to get this wonderful recipe. We also loved making backed potatoes rounds – kind of an updated version on the old potato skin idea (click HERE).
There is something about simple roasted potatoes, with just a touch of flavor. Serious Foodie has a twist for the traditional roasted rosemary potatoes – use the West African Paradise spice rub to finish this lovely dish, adding notes of citrus and fennel (click HERE for the recipe).
There are so many great stuffing recipes, and we’re sure you have your favorite. If you’re looking for something a bit different, try this recipe for Mushroom/Pear stuffing. We make ours in muffin tins to give everyone a healthy serving (click HERE for the recipe).
Want to go a different direction with your carbs dish? How about risotto? It’s not as difficult as some people think, and we have a good how-to article on making this traditional Northern Italian dish (click HERE for Risotto 101). We’ve also shown how to make risotto-style farro, quinoa, and pasta (a dish that’s more Spanish than Italian).
