The Best Wine Match with Chocolate is…

The best wine, by far, that we have every had with chocolate is a rare wine from a rare Italian grape – Aleatico – called Nanerone Piandibugnano.  We had experienced it during a tasting about 5 years ago in Princeton, NJ – and immediately bought a case.  We have shared this wine with a number of experienced wine collectors, sommeliers, and restaurant owners – and it is eye-popping.  It evokes sweet plum, a bit of raspberry and sweet red cherry, along with hints of vanilla and mineral. It is medium-bodied, with lots of flavor, finishing with a smooth pudding-like texture.  When matched with a rich chocolate cake or torte, it just sings.
