Late Harvest Riesling
There are several Riesling-based dessert wines which we tasted over the last few months – and there were quite a few that worked well with chocolate. This includes late harvest wines, eisenwein, and US and Canadian ice wines. The Mittelrhein Eiswein we tasted was a nice match with milk chocolate, with concentrated apple and grape must flavors, having an extremely long finish.
Our favorite was from the well-known New Zealand producer, Cloudy Bay. Their late harvest Riesling (2009) was a rich, opulent wine, having notes of tropical fruit, along with a beautiful rich and intense dose of peppermint, candied oranges and marmalade. We had some semi-sweet chocolates with candied orange from Norman Love that were amazing with this wine. It is a little hard to find, but well worth the effort.
