Mocali Morellino di Scansano

Mocali Morellino di Scansano

Mocali Morellino di Scansano 2012

Morellino di Scansano is an Italian red wine made in the hilly environs of the village of Scansano, in the Maremma region of coastal Tuscany.  The name may come from the morello cherry, a dark red cherry with great tartness and acidity. The Mocali estate is a natural Tuscan beauty – the vineyards and olive groves alternate with oak and pine forests.
Morellino is made from at least 85% Sangiovese; this wine has an unusual combination of 85% Sangiovese, 12% Malvasia and 3% Alicante.  It is aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, then aged in the bottle for 12 months before release.
Why this wine works:
This wine has balanced acidity, a fragrant aroma with lots of red berry, and a long lasting flavor of cherry.  This wine can be enjoyed on its own, with the pizza and pasta, or grilled vegetables.
Scoring:
This was the only repeat wine from our last tasting (click on this link to see our Sangiovese Tasting – Round 2).  As happened during the last tasting, this wine had a wide range of scores – a few 2 ratings, a few 5 ratings. The Mocali Morellino di Scansano had an average score of 3.67, with 2 people saying it was the best of the evening.
Where to buy:
We sourced this wine from the Central Liquors, Flemington NJ, and was purchased for $15.  Given the price, it was probably the bargain wine of the evening.
