Our love for food, and region-focused cuisine, is a direct result of the magic that was made in the kitchens of our Italian-American household. Ingredients were carefully selected, and recipes were kept close to the original “old country” versions. Lots of love was added to each dish, even when the meal was pleasantly simple.
Spicy condiments, or even simple pepper flakes, was a staple of our table. Spicy elements were added to everything from bread to pasta to meats to vegetables. The Serious Foodie Calabrian Pepper Relish is a spicy, complex sauce, centered on the peppers from the hills of Calabria as the foundation of this wonderful sauce. This sauce is based on my Nonna’s original Calabrian recipe, which uses mushrooms to infuse a heavy dose of umami (even if that word was never a part of the Italian lexicon). This sauce is the perfect balance of spicy & savory. Add a heaping spoonful to a bowl of pasta and fresh basil for an easy gourmet meal.
