The BBQ scene in Phoenix received a hefty boost from this fairly new restaurant – and it’s quickly become insanely popular. The smokers run all day to slow-cook the meat to perfection. Like many traditional southern BBQ joints, once they run out of food, that’s it! Be sure to stop here as soon as it opens, and even then you can wait as long as 2 hours at peak times – but it is surely worth the wait. Be sure to try the brisket, pulled pork, and beef ribs, the last of which you will need to purchase by the pound as opposed to getting the quintessential 2-meat plate. The sides are good, but this is definitely a place for the carnivorous foodies.

There is no shortage of choices when it comes Mexican food in the Phoenix metro area. Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza has built quite a name for herself, becoming an icon for her style. This restaurant is close to the downtown area, a little West of the airport. The surrounding neighborhood might be a bit funky, but don’t be dissuaded – The food and the restaurant itself is filled with character that should not be missed. The art, décor, and food at Barrio Café exemplify a combination of New Mexican with deep rooted traditional Mexican. Here you will find some of the best, creative Mexican dishes in the valley. Suggested dishes are the open-faced shrimp quesadillas, the table-side guacamole, and anything made with their exemplary mole. We consider this place one of the best Mexican restaurants in the US.

This small shack can be a little difficult to find, hence the name. When you find yourself at the strip mall with no idea on the location, just enter the door without a sign. Take that back. There’s a sign outside that says, “Unattended children will be given espresso and a free kitten”. The humor fills the inside of Dick’s Hideaway and certainly adds to the charm. With a menu in hand, there are a number of excellent go-to items: If you like spice food, their green chile dishes are amazing, but you must be able to handle some serious spice. Their burgers are well known throughout the valley (for those who have found the place) and the carne adovada is packed full of flavor.

What would be a sports weekend without the beer? There’s no better place to enjoy a local Arizona draft than Four Peaks Brewery in Tempe. If you’re planning to spend the championship game weekend in the Scottsdale or Tempe area, it’s worth the short trip to get to this staple spot. While you can’t go wrong with any of the beers, the brewery is best known for its Kilt Lifter Scottish-style ale. The 8th Street Pale Ale has also garnered attention, winning the WBC Bronze Medal twice and the GABF Silver Medal winner two-times. Their menu is worth attention as well: While the burgers and sandwiches are great, the best dishes come from their rotating special menu and their “Brewer’s Favorites” selections. Their Fish and Chips are a tier above all others in the valley, with fish that is beer battered with their Kilt Lifter.

Pizzeria Bianco has made waves throughout the country as one of the top pizza locations. Once it was little known to the public outside of Phoenix, there is now more than one location to eat the carefully crafted artisan pizza. How famous is it? It’s one of the few pizza restaurants having a Wikipedia entry. The wait at the original downtown Phoenix location will sometimes exceed two hours on peak hours. The Biltmore location however can cut down on the time, but certainly not skimp on the quality. And while the selection of base pizzas is slim, bear in mind that you can customize with the amazing toppings to your heart’s content! This is a bucket-list pizza place – it is considered pizza perfection by many experts.
