Casanova di Neri Rosso 2011

This wine is from the famous town of Montalcino, from one of the most revered producers.  The wines of Casanova di Neri are made solely from grapes grown in their vineyards, and the Rosso is 100% Sangiovese.  In general, the Rosso di Montalcino is always a younger wine than its big brother Brunello di Montalcino, and is easier to enjoy shortly after bottling.  Brunellos are more demanding, requiring more time , and will be much more expensive than the Rosso – but for those who have the money, and the time to wait, Brunello di Montalcino can offer magic in a bottle. Traditionally, the Brunellos are aged 3 years or more in oak casks, then at least 1 more year in the bottle, producing interesting, nuanced wines; the “Riserva” version spends one more year aging before release.
The Rosso di Montalcino offers the less demanding side of Montalcino Sangiovese   – yet still having the character of the region. The Rosso is fermented in stainless steel for 2-3 weeks, then is aged in oak barrels for around 15 months.
For our tasting, the Casanova di Neri Rosso di Montelcino had an average score of 4.09.  One taster rated it “3”, but most liked this wine, and rated it 4 to 5, with one person saying it was the best of the evening.  This wine can be drunk on its own, or enjoyed with salad, pizza, or pasta.  It would also stand up to medium flavored meat dishes.

We sourced this wine from Total Wine in University Park, FL, and was purchased for $20.
