New Zealand is a cultural and culinary mixing ground that is both exotic and familiar. Their cuisine is largely driven by local ingredients and seasonal variations – they were farm-to-table long before the term became popular in the USA.
The first series of Serious Foodie products from New Zealand focus on the tamarillo. Tamarillo has been around for a long time, generally believed to be native to the Andes of Peru. It was adopted by New Zealand as a commercial crop, and has developed a distinctive flavor unique to that country. The flesh of the New Zealand tamarillo is tangy and variably sweet, with a bold and complex flavor, and may be compared to kiwifruit, sun-dried tomato, guava, or passion fruit, with hints of sweet cherry.
The Serious Foodie tamarillo vinegar is often called the balsamic vinegar of New Zealand, with its deep sweet and sour flavors. It can be used in dressings, compotes, or added to stews and braised dishes (e.g. Boeuf Bourguignon). Use it to create a unique hollandaise sauce, or add it to the pan with a bit of butter after sautéing fish, chicken, or pork to create an amazing (and simple) sauce. It’s sweet/sour flavor can also enhance desserts – it pairs especially well with apples, pears, and any stone fruit. (Ingredients: Tamarillo pulp, red wine vinegar, white balsamic vinegar, sugar)
The Serious Foodie Tamarillo Grill Sauce captures the essence of New Zealand cuisine: tangy, sweet, savory, spicy, and completely unique. This sauce can be used directly on chicken, fish, steak, or pork as a traditional grill sauce, or used as a braising sauce. Try it in place of traditional ketchup, or Worcestershire sauce. (Ingredients: Tamarillo Pulp, Filtered Water, Brown Sugar, Red Wine Vinegar, Pinot Noir, Lemon Juice, Organic Chili Paste, Fresh Shallots, Tomato Paste, Sea Salt, Black Pepper.)
The Tamarillo Dressing and Marinade captures the wonderful, exotic taste of the New Zealand fruit – flavors of cherry, raspberry, and tomato show through this versatile dressing. Use directly on salads (including potato salad or slaw), or pair with shellfish, chicken, pork, duck, or vegetables. (Ingredients: Tamarillo Pulp, Red Wine Vinegar, Cherry Juice Concentrate, Filtered Water, Non-GMO canola oil, Sugar, Lemon Juice, Dijon Mustard, Sea Salt, Black Pepper.)
Serious Foodie is working a wonderful tamarillo farmers’ cooperative in New Zealand (TAMCO) to bring this new bold flavor to the USA.
